What is the difference between a self-propelled and a transit wheelchair?

A self-propelled model can be moved by the user themselves using push rims fitted to the rear wheels. They also come with pushing handles in order to make it easy for another person to push the chair. The larger wheels can make it an advantage when you need to push the chair over an obstacle. A transit wheelchair has a smaller set of wheels at the rear and is usually designed to be pushed by a person other than the user. They are a great option if you rely on someone else to push.

What is the cost of a manual wheelchair?

The cost depends on a number of things and can range from £150.00 or less through to £6,000 plus. There is a great range of suppliers such as Invacare, KI Mobility, Ottobock and Karma to name a few.

What do I need to take into account when buying a wheelchair?

There are a number of areas to take into account when purchasing:

• What is it being used for?
• Are you being pushed or do you want to move it yourself?
• How light does it need to be?
• Does it need to go into a car?
• Do you need to have a folding wheelchair?
• What physical disabilities need to be taken into account?
• Are you an active person?

What is the easiest wheelchair to push?

The easiest wheelchairs to push depend on the ground you are going over. Larger rear wheels on some models will go over obstacles more easily than other products with transit wheels.

Are wheelchairs VAT exempt?

Your local mobility shop can go through the VAT exemption with you in relation to wheelchairs. The majority of the time wheelchairs will be VAT exempt if you are buying for yourself and have been classed with a chronic illness or disability.

Yes we have a limited stock of products that can be hired for either a weekend or longer. Just call either Bicester, Banbury or Northampton.
