Power Chairs FAQs
Are electric-powered wheelchairs the same as powerchairs?
This can be a very difficult question to answer as users along with suppliers can have different perceptions of what is a powerchair or an electric wheelchair. For the purpose of this question power wheelchairs generally have more features and options than electric wheelchairs which can be beneficial to users with greater mobility issues. As powered wheelchairs offer greater mobility assistance than mobility scooters; so features like mid-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, power chairs can offer even further freedom to those with mobility limitations.
What is the difference between a standard electric wheelchair and a custom electric wheelchair?
With a standard type power chair or electric wheelchair you will be limited to basic adjustments on them. This could be adjustments to armrest height through to moving the controller from right to left. There is very little that can be changed. While a custom or bespoke electric wheelchair or power chair will have a multitude or adjustments that can be made depending on the requirements of the user. This could include seat adjustments for width, depth and height through to custom backrests. Always best to talk to a specialist at Shire Mobility who will go through your requirements in full.
Are power chairs better than electric wheelchairs?
The answer is very much that of personal preference and the mobility issues the user may have. Of course, a wide range of factors come into play when considering any powered wheelchair including weight capacity, frequency of usage, whether they are your main form of mobility solutions, and a host of other considerations. What many power chair users report is an improved smooth and comfortable ride as well as being better catered for their mobility needs than traditional electric wheelchairs can offer.
Can you get different power wheelchair types?
